Husband and wife duo, Kyle and Antonise Seymour were crowned the winners of the first UB-North Innovation Award on Friday, December 8 at the Pelican Bay Hotel in Freeport, Grand Bahama. The Seymours walked away with a prize of $5000.00, as well as gift certificates from EZ Dental, Kelly’s, Gizmo & Gadgets and Renu Day Spa.
MovMour Mobile Gaming was one of four finalists who had five minutes to pitch their business in front a panel of five judges. Mrs. Seymour began her presentation with a one minute video clip to awaken in everyone the possibilities found in the world of gaming. It was then her job to prove to the judges that Mov Mour Mobile Gaming was in fact the most innovative business on Grand Bahama.
This was the University of the Bahamas-North’s first innovation awards competition established by the UB-North, UBIGNITE Project to recognize the innovative achievements of micro, small and medium size businesses in Grand Bahama. More than a dozen businesses applied for this innovation award, but only the top four were selected to vie for the top prize of $5000.00.
Eligible applicants had to prove that their businesses were new to the context or environment in which it was introduced; clearly explain how the innovation addressed at least one problem and provide evidence of commercial success.
The idea for the innovation award was born out of the UB IGNITE project which is a collaborative initiative between the Inter-American Development Bank and the University of The Bahamas-North focused on sparking innovation and entrepreneurship in Grand Bahama. The Project is aligned with the university’s mission to actively contribute to national development and foster economic growth by championing sustainable entrepreneurial innovation across The Bahamas.
Chief Judge, Dr. Seymour said that the competition was stiff and that the judges were impressed by the diverse businesses that were among the finalists. He said ultimately, the winner had to tick all the boxes and it was MovMour Mobile Gaming that came out victorious. He congratulated all the competitors and wished them continued success as they grow their businesses.
This year’s runner-up was Renu Day Spa whose innovative business is Recovery Tourism; third place was Studypelago, an online platform connecting tutors and students; fourth place was eSocial Marketing.
